How NYC Used A Computer System To Stop Crime
from the who-says-computers-are-bad? dept
It's clear by now that any time people want to keep something from getting out of control (for example weight or spending) it helps to have constant feedback. Computer software has been amazing in providing people and companies tools to see that sort feedback, as well as to organize it and analyze it. So, it shouldn't be any surprise to find out that one of the reasons New York City claims they've cut down on crime so much over the last decade is by using computer software to make sure they had constant feedback about what types of crimes were happening where. The system isn't very complex at all, but it provides police with the feedback they need to see where potential problem might arise. The end result is a much lower crime rate (and a much more enjoyable city to walk around in).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
