Technologist Voters' Guide

from the do-we-need-it? dept

Declan McCullough's latest opinion piece suggests that techies take a page from various lobbying organizations and set up a voter's guide for technology issues, so that people who are really interested in certain issues can have a better sense of who to vote for. His argument is that such a guide would make politicians think twice before introducing ridiculous legislation. Of course, this might not be as easy as it sounds. Not all techies agree on a lot of these political issues - and in some situations compelling cases can be made that very different positions will do more to benefit technology. Also, it's not clear how many people consider technology issues big enough to vote entirely based on them. While other "hot button" issues can certainly make voters pick their candidate, I'm not sure how large the population of voters who vote entirely based on technology issues is.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
