Her Picture Became A Porn Ad

from the that'll-teach-you dept

Last month we posted an article about scam artists using online personals ads to try to trick people into signing up for porn sites. That article, it seems, convinced a woman to write in saying that many of those ads seem to use her picture that she had put on an online dating site for about a month. Now, her picture shows up in all sorts of "fake" personals ads suggesting all sorts of things about her that she'd rather not be associated with. She tried to get the ads taken down, but it's proven to be a difficult process. Most law enforcement agencies and lawyers don't think she has much of a case against anyone, but it still really bothers her (to the point that she checked herself into a hospital). As most people say in the article, no one is really sure how to prevent such a thing from happening, or if there really is anything that you can do after it does happen. Certainly, there are plenty of worse ways to have your identity stolen, but this illustrates one that you might not have thought about.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
