New Hope For Wireless Data
Wireless guru Andrew Seybold sees light at the end of the tunnel for wireless data in the US. Carriers are getting smarter about how and what services they offer to consumers and enterprise users. There is clearly a future for wireless data in the US, but what that future holds is still unclear. Most of the success in the US market such as ringtones and the rapid growth of text messaging is just replicating similar trends in Europe and Asia. By that logic, we should be a bit worried. European carriers are struggling to get users to upgrade to 2.5G networks and services. Even in the US, consumer are attracted to new color handsets but they aren't adding on data plans that take advantage of the new handsets' capabilities. Carriers are still struggling with marketing consumer data services. The key is the youth market. Carriers have to get more aggressive about making data accessible to kids. The enteprise side is being held back by costs, coverage and speed, all three of which will improve over time.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
