Free Web Research Link Closed Under Pressure From Pay Sites
from the good-or-bad? dept
Some interesting questions are raised by this Washington Post article about how the US Energy Department has shut down a free research website after being pressured by two similar commercial research services. Both of the services offer free search capabilities, as well, but also push people to pay for their research. The arguments on both sides make some sense. Those against closing it down fear that the commercial sites will now lock in their users, and eventually force them to pay. They also don't feel as comfortable with the search results. Those who support the closure think that the government is wasting money on a service the private sector is already providing.
Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Easy
Looks like two options:
- shut down the free site, and get tax dollars from the commercial site and its employees
- shut down the commercial sites, and spend lots of money funding the free site.
It's all about the bucks, imho.
