Sprint PCS to Sell Nokia Phone After 2-Year Hiatus

I have to admit that I'm surprised it took this long, but Nokia's 2-year hiatus from the Sprint PCS system is finally ending. Sprint PCS has now agreed to sell the low-end 3585 phone, saying that finally Nokia has made a CDMA phone that meets its technical requirements. They claim that they dropped Nokia in the first place due to techinical problems with the Nokias. It's been surprising that Nokia, the world's largest handset maker hasn't stepped up with an improved CDMA offering. It seems, however, they may have realized that they need to make a bigger push into CDMA markets if they want to keep growing, and since Sprint PCS covers 40% of the CDMA market in the US, it's logical for them to find a way to put past differences behind them. Right now, it's just that one phone, but if things go well, I'm sure that higher end Nokias will start showing up on Sprint PCS soon enough.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
