Wireless In The City

People just can't stop talking about Wi-Fi. We're well past the "what it is" stage. We're onto the "what does it all mean" stage. The New York Times looks at the Bryant Park Wi-Fi network and how the network fits with the purpose of the park. I'm not sure it does though. I love the idea of a free Wi-Fi network. But I don't want to be surfing the web or checking email with a scarf, hat and topcoat. I'd rather pay money to sit in a warm, covered coffee shop. And if its sunny outside, I want to enjoy the park, not squint trying to read my laptop screen. Now if they offered free Wi-Fi at Grand Central and Penn Stations, that would be useful.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Indeed

Just a few days ago I was in Bryant Park, but it was freezing outside (and raining on and off), so I ended up in a Starbucks a few blocks away using their wifi instead.
