Immobots Take Control

MIT's Tech Review has an article about complex systems that are being given "immobots", which are immovable robots, that use model-based reasoning AI to determine and solve problems on the fly. Basically, it sounds like the latest name for AI systems that are used to do mechanical work. The idea is to create a model of the physical system, pointing out where things can go wrong, instead of trying to point out all the potential problems in the code. By using the model, the AI can better figure out where the problem is, and how to route around it. The makes it possible for the immobots to respond to problems that no one had thought of previously. It certainly sounds impressive, but it still seems to open up the possibilities for new, more complex problems to show up as a result of these immobots malfunctioning as well.
