The Games Wal-Mart Doesn't Play
from the Wal-Mart-morality-cops dept
Video games have different ratings concerning what age they're appropriate for (like movies), but it seems that Wal-Mart has their own ratings system in determing what games are appropriate for their shelves. As a company they can certainly do whatever they like when it comes to choosing products for their shelves, but some game makers aren't happy that Wal-Mart's huge share of the gaming market means that they simply have to comply in order to receive any shelf space. Some companies even produce two different copies of their games: one that's been sanitized for Wal-Mart shoppers, and one that's for anyone else. I think the cries of censorship are a bit misguided, since Wal-Mart isn't the government, and has no obligation to put any games on their shelves. However, I wonder how many people know that the games they're buying at Wal-Mart might not be the same game they could have picked up at a different retailer?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
