Music Industry Experimenting With Enhanced CDs
from the closer,-but... dept
I'm actually fairly surprised to see that the music industry actually is finally testing other ways to extend their offering beyond the CD. The latest, is a new trend to offer additional features to the folks who actually buy the CD. A bunch of new CDs include keys that let people access additional content online such as videos and live recordings. Already, though, people in the industry are complaining that not enough people are using the features. I don't think that's a big surprise. These sorts of enhanced features probably have a somewhat limited audience (right now), but as other features become more widespread, this more complete offering from the record labels makes a lot more sense than the old "sell a plastic disc" business model. However, if you're just offering live videos, you've already limited your audience to people who are really big fans, who are interested in the videos, and who have computers with high speed internet access - so the actual implementation of enhanced CD will have an impact on how many people use the enhanced features.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Why not *really* enhanced CDs?
Imagine a 240 minute uninterrupted mix on one CD. But no such luck. That's what I do with my legitimately purchased music in order to fit my dedicated 3" cd-only MP3 player by Compaq. It makes my music collection more portable and convenient.
it will be a breakthrough when the first recording company actually releases their music direct to MP3 discs.
