Mobile Messaging Use Increasing in U.S.

For about two years now I've been actively using text messaging on my mobile phone. While the stories continue about how Americans aren't using text messaging, a funny thing has happened: they have started using text messaging. A new study shows that nearly 50% of young adults in the US are using text messaging features on their phones. While people have plenty of opinions on why it was so slow to catch on, there are two simple reasons that suggest why it's finally taking off: the first is the ability to message across carriers. Most people have no clue what wireless carrier their friends use, so it's quite a show stopper to not know if your message is going to get through most of the time. The second is pricing. Over the past two years, the carriers have continued to tweak and change their pricing models to make them much more reasonable (especially for young adults on a tight budget).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
