Pop Gets Crackle, Snap Back

from the everything-old-is-new-again dept

I think the first CD I ever bought that had fake vinyl sounds on it was bought in 1996 from a small NYC band that put them at the beginning, in the middle (to show where the vinyl was supposed to be "flipped"), and at the end. Now it seems that plenty of musicians think it's the in thing to do to add extra "vinyl" crackling noises to their pristine CD recordings to add a little more character (or something). Everyone seems to have a different reason for doing it, but now that there's a big article about it, I think we can officially declare this trend hyped out.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Girlfriend

The first CD I remember doing this was Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend", which is still one of my favs. Will we one day see a broadband provider add in the "modem dial-up" sounds too? ;-)
