Spam Works For Indian Filmmaker
from the not-really-spam,-though... dept
As we were just talking about how terrible spam is, here's an article saying that it's working for an Indian filmmaker trying to raise money to make his film. The headline is a bit misleading, though, because this isn't really spam. He started out just by sending an email to his friends, saying that he needed money to make this movie (he's already a semi-successful actor). I assume, from there, the email got passed on to other friends who have been donating small amounts to the movie project. This isn't typical "spam". He also says that he wouldn't do this again. He thinks it's only working because of the novelty of doing it the first time. What's scary is that some people are going to read this and think that they, too, should try to raise money for projects this way.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
