A Yawn Of A Year In Tech

from the yeah,-so? dept

A Washington Post "roundup" of the year in technology points out that it was pretty damn boring. Most companies are trying to figure out what to do with all that technology crap they bought at the end of the 90s, so the last thing they want to do is buy any new technology crap. However, the article does point out some trends that are more important than whether or not the technology world is "boring". First off, the internet has now clearly permeated mainstream society. I know this gets said every year, but it keeps on creeping deeper and deeper into our everyday lives - and that's worth noting. The other four roundup items she lists still suggest that things are humming along in the technology world, but that now companies are actually focused on building useful technologies instead of pie-in-the-sky technologies. Hopefully, that's the case.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
