Slain Woman's Family Fights Internet Information Brokers
from the looking-for-someone-to-blame dept
Over two years ago we posted the terrible story of Amy Boyer who was murdered by a deranged young man who chronicled his obsession with her and plans to kill her on a website using her name. At the time, there were questions about whether or not the internet should be blamed for her murder instead of the deranged guy. The latest update on the story is that the family of the girl are still going after the company that provided the murderer with Boyer's social security number and work address (where she was shot). The company claims that the info they obtained (for a mere $150) didn't contribute to the danger she was in, and everything they did was completely legal. The results of the court case could have a big impact on what companies can do with your private information.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
