Consumers Want Their Thin TVs

from the drool dept

The economy may still be troubled, and consumer confidence may remain in the dumps, but consumers still want their super expensive fancy plasma television sets. As much as a $3,000 (at the low end) product can, they're apparently hopping off the shelves. We're clearly still in the early adopter stage, but there's enough demand that production is ramping up, meaning that lower prices should help drive the demand curve down to more reasonable levels fairly rapidly. Within a year, they expect the prices of plasma and LCD screens to drop by about a third. Clearly, there's still a growing market for home entertainment systems.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Next Step

If the unemployment rate is 8%, that still leaves 80-90% of people that have jobs.

I'm waiting for the emergence of wall-sized TV screens. Then we could have a new industry of virtual tourism, where one could visit authentic scenery of 14th-century Paris or whrever.
