MCI Raising Rates Yet Again

from the that-didn't-take-long-at-all dept

MCI Worldcom has been raising their long-distance rates as quickly as they possibly can. It was just a couple months ago that they raised most of their rates, and now they're already raising their rates again. I understand that they're just trying to turn around their bankrupt business, but all this is going to do is make sure that they lose customers. The story says that analysts expect Sprint and AT&T to follow suit (though, not nearly as high). I wonder if these moves will cause people to more seriously consider alternatives. It's not hard to see how these rate hikes will lead to good things for providers of other solutions. People are going to start dropping their landline long-distance service in favor of their mobile phones and VoIP services like Vonage. While there have been stories over the past couple years of people doing just that, these rate hikes may finally push a lot more people over the fence.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
