Venture Capital Funding Drops To Pre-Bubble Levels

from the is-that-the-bottom-or-does-it-keep-going? dept

The first reports looking at how much venture capital was invested in the last quarter of 2002 show that investments have dropped to their lowest levels since 1998 in California (and in Washington DC as well). I'm actually surprised that the investment levels are still this high. While the report warns that we may still be heading down the down curve, this doesn't indicate the complete drop off in venture capital funding that people make it out to be. In 1998 there was still plenty of venture capital being raised, as there appears to be now. The real question, though, is what types of companies are getting this money. Is it just being used to prop up old, questionable investments, or is it going towards new ideas that have the potential to be something great?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
