Building A Web Site, And A Relationship

from the awwwwwww dept

Apparently, building a website or doing other online related activities are replacing "family bonding" moments like building a birdhouse. It seems like mostly anecdotal evidence, but lots of families have stories about how kids and parents came together to work on some sort of internet related project, that helped both sides learn to communicate better with each other. How long until we have family counseling programs that force parents to make websites with their kids? Honestly, though, I do think this makes a lot of sense, and is probably worth studying more. The main thing is that usually it's the kids who more in control when it comes to technology - and it really lets them open up with their parents to be teaching rather than being lectured to (often the source of resentment).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

And when these kids grow up,

they will be lecturing their kids about how to build a web site, and how this is supposed to "liberate" them.

It's like the current generation of parents who think that watching Peanuts is some sort of special event -- to kids, it's just low-quality animation set in a bygone era.
