Family Can't Be Sold On eBay

from the eBay-publicity dept

In the past two weeks there have been a large number of high profile auctions on eBay - all of which received tremendous publicity for the eBay aspect of the story. I'm still wondering when the novelty of using eBay as a marketplace dies down, and the press stops reporting on those stories. I'm sure the PR folks at eBay love it, though, so they're only too thrilled to step up and make some comments when a publicity seeking writer tries to sell his whole family on eBay. Even though eBay shut down the auction (goes against rules saying you can't sell people), they still made their ever-present spokesperson available to comment on it. I wonder how many PR people are now considering some sort of eBay-related stunt to get publicity for their clients?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    IANAL, but...

I'm pretty sure there are laws on the books that prohibit the buying and selling of human beings in this country.

It would be nice if someone in a position of authority would step forward and threaten to bring charges against these types of imbeciles.

It would (hopefully) cut down on stupid illegitimate auctions.
