Color Hiptop Due In Summer

It's not often that us Americans get our hands on cool new wireless gadgetry before our friends in Europe of Asia. Such has been the case with the Danger Hiptop (aka T-Mobile Sidekick). But of course it couldn't last. According to the BBC when the Hiptop starts shipping in Europe this summer, it will have a color screen. Hopefully they'll offer a US color version at the same time and allow current users to upgrade. Other interesting tidbits from the BBC are that to date there have been tens of thousands units sold, two-thirds of the users are aged 18-24 years old, and half the users access the web daily and send and receive 50 messages per day. The reason the Hiptop works is because its a great combination of price and user experience. Something no other wireless service has been able to replicate. The big question though is T-Mobile making money on its Hiptop users?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
