AT&T Wireless Wants People To Switch Land Lines To Mobile

A trade group representing AT&T Wireless and a few other carriers is now pushing to get the FCC to make it possible to switch your land line phone number to your mobile phone. This is interesting, because the wireless carriers have been fighting tooth and nail against wireless number portability that would force them to let people take their mobile phone numbers with them when they switched between wireless carriers. They're afraid that (1) it's too costly to set up a system to allow that and (2) it only means that customers will leave them. That second point is amusing because it shows how bad all the mobile phone companies know their service is. None of them are confident that people will switch to them. Just worried that people will switch away from them. However, as a sort of "fair play" move, it seems they now want to make their wireline competitors feel some of the heat also.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
