Amazon's Free Shipping Offer Pressures Other Online Retailers

from the can't-take-it-away-now dept

When Amazon announced their earnings last week, they also said that they would keep their free shipping deal because they believed consumers liked it. What they left out is that consumers would be pissed off if it went away. And, angry customers are worse than customers who just don't use your service. Now analysts are saying that free shipping is becoming like frequent flyer programs in the airline industry. It costs a lot of money, but you need to have it - and once you've started, you can never take it away. Other e-commerce companies are also feeling pressure to offer similar (costly) free shipping programs just to be able to compete.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Not really

Like the airlines, they can keep the frequent flier miles, but raise the base price to cover costs. They did this during the late 90s boom.
