Davis May Back Internet Tax Plan

from the when-the-going-gets-tough...-raise-taxes dept

California's governor, Gray Davis, has long been an opponent to any sort of internet tax, knowing that it would greatly upset his Silicon Valley-based constituency. Of course, that constituency has gotten much smaller recently, and more importantly, California is in desperate need of tax revenue. So, without any real justification other than "we need that money", Davis is reconsidering his position on internet taxes. Of course, there's no explanation for why his old reason for not supporting internet taxes (it would harm a growing industry) don't still apply. In fact, some are afraid that if a proposal for taxing California companies shipping to California residents was put in place, it would just drive sales to non-California companies.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Silicon Valley needs Welfare

The Internet Tax is an Outrage! Because we need the government tax subsidies, like steel or farming. We are all for free markets, which is why we need government protection all the more.
