For The Mix Tape, A Digital Upgrade And Notoriety

from the promotion-or-piracy? dept

We've argued here over and over again that the music industry is taking the wrong position when it comes the music sharing. They're angering their own customers, but, even worse, they're missing out on a huge opportunity to promote their artists. The NY Times takes this argument to a different medium, looking at the rise in popularity of CD mix trading groups. These groups apparently have members who make mix CDs (usually from music they own) and send them out to each other. Of course, it doesn't take a genius to realize that these groups probably help the music industry grow. They give people a chance to hear new bands that they never would have heard before, and probably increase the sales of those bands' CDs. The music industry, however, calls them pirates and says it has no problem going after them to prove their point.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
