Video Games That Never End

from the cool dept

A fascinating article about some work being done in the artificial intelligence world to make video games that just keep on going. The idea is to allow players to have more freedom to go off and explore, rather than be limited by the story line that most games present - which don't lead to many options for variations. Of course, a game without any story line can get to be quite boring, so the idea here is to build a story around what the characters do. The game continually takes the player's actions into account. Kill a potential ally early on and, it can come back to haunt you later on. I'm sure it's still a ways off from being really playable, but it certainly sounds like a great development.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

These types of games are already appearing...

Recent classics like the Grand Theft Auto series and Morrowind already give the player the freedom to do whatever they please. The "game on rails" approach is fast fading away, to be replaced with truly interactive, learning environments with memory.
