Police Track Down Stolen Hard Drive
from the that-was-fast dept
Late last week we posted a story about a Canadian data management company (subsidiary of IBM) missing a hard drive that contained all sorts of private information from many many people. It seems that the police were pretty quick to pick up the scent, and have already tracked down the hard drive and the individual they say is responsible - though, little in the way of details are given out. At this point, they don't believe that the data was used in any way, but they're checking. I wonder how one checks on something like that. Just yesterday, it was revealed that even more private data was on the disk, including the tax information for 43,000 businesses in Manitoba. There is, not surprisingly, already a class action suit being formed against the data management company, ISM, for mishandling their hard drives. A number of ISM customer claim they're evaluating other providers.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
