19 Charged In Identity Theft That Netted $7 Million In Tax Refunds

Another example of an identity theft case that had nothing to do with how well people protected their own information. According to this NY Times article, a group of people had some sketchy tax preparers file fake tax returns in order to collect the fraudulent refunds. It's not clear from the article how the group figured out who to file fake tax returns for, but the scam appears to have lasted for quite a while if the group collected more than $7 million in fraudulent refunds.
