How Regular Dialup ISPs Are Getting Squeezed From Both Sides

from the trouble-in-AOL-land dept

There have been a bunch of articles recently about how the big ISPs like AOL, MSN and Earthlink are struggling to keep their customers. Most of these articles focus on how customers are leaving for the greener, speedier, pastures of broadband access. However, they're also getting squeezed from below mainly by United Online, the company that bought up all the formerly free ISPs, and turned them all into cheap ISPs. Of course, as we mentioned a couple months back, Earthlink is experimenting with their own cheap dialup service. I wonder how many people use these as their main way to connect - and how many just use it for backup or travel purposes? Either way, it makes you wonder what reason people have to keep paying the $25/month for AOL.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I'll tell you why.

They want to keep the address and screenname.

(2 of 3 ppl who could have had FREE access opted to keep AOL because they want to keep the address/name)
