Everyone Joins The WiFi Party

The latest in the News.com series on WiFi is a look at how WiFi is starting to spread beyond computers to all sorts of other devices that can connect to the internet, such as TVs, MP3 players, and digital cameras. This actually fits well with a Business 2.0 article taking a look at the possibilities for Telesym and their voice-over-WiFi system. Of course, when it gets down to the device level, WiFi actually does start competing with Bluetooth in some areas (though, there are clear advantages and disadvantages to each method). While Bluetooth is still better for things like connecting a wireless earpiece to your phone, does it still make sense for your printer, when your printer is WiFi'd to the network? But, just think of the absolutely useless possibilities for multi-wireless system use for a single phone call: you use your bluetooth earpiece to connect to your WiFi enabled PDA, which is hooked into an access point that is connected via a fixed wireless solution. In the end, let's face it, people don't care which system connects them, so long as it's cheap, it works, and it's easy.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
