Virtual Protests

from the world's-colliding dept

Whether or not online games are really building the communities that their creators expected, the people who are involved with them seem to take the games very seriously - sometimes blurring their real and virtual lives. The latest example of this is that many people involved in online games are organizing virtual protests or vigils, similar to ones that happen in real-life. Of course, for people trying to protest actions of the government, I imagine it's a pretty big waste of time to organize a protest on The Sims Online. I also wonder if this is just an extension of the trend of people to protest just for the sake of protesting, without necessarily understanding the real issues of what they're protesting (or working towards a real solution instead of just sloganizing). Being involved in a protest within an online game certainly takes a lot less effort than going out and taking a real stand.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
