Tracking Down Stolen Laptops
from the sounds-like-a-good-system dept
There are products out there that act like a lojack system for your laptop, where you can ping the laptop and a GPS system will tell you where it is. This seems like a bit of overkill for a fairly remote possibility. Instead, this system described in The Register sounds a lot more reasonable. It's just a piece of software that can be used to track where the laptop is logging on from. So, if you report your laptop stolen, the next time it accesses the internet, it sends along the IP address, which can then be tracked down. Interestingly, the article points out that this system was used to track down a fraud. Someone sold a school's laptop, and then reported it stolen in order to keep the money. When the laptop next logged on, it was found and the whole scam came crashing down.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
