Scientists Converge On The Very Small

from the it-all-fits-together dept

When people in the tech industry talk about "convergence", they're usually talking about cramming the features of one device onto another device. This NY Times article, though is talking about a very different kind of convergence. It's a convergence of scientific practices to allow formerly separate areas of science to work together in reaching some interesting breakthroughs. All of the focus surrounds nanotechnology, but the idea is to take that nanotech, and pass it off to biotechnology, electronics and brain researchers. They've even given the "converged" group an acronym: NBIC (for nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science). The people involved with NBIC say that it's important for scientists from various fields not to pigeon-hole themselves, but to work collaboratively.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This is all just a plea for more funding. Rename collaborations and make up acronyms, but it's really all about getting more funding.
