Salon Warns It May Not Survive Beyond February
from the too-bad dept
The latest news from Salon doesn't look good. They're saying that they may not be able to survive past this month. This would truly be unfortunate, as they have consistently had excellent online content, even if they were struggling for a business model. Apparently, they haven't paid rent in a couple of months, and if they don't raise more money in the next couple of weeks, they'll be forced to shut down. They've had a couple other "dire" warnings in the past, but always managed to scrape up a little more money. This time, though, it looks like they're cutting it very very close.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I remember when Salon was the first site I visited when I logged online, haven't read it for weeks, if not months.

Re: No Subject Given
Have to admit the few times I visited after, I also found the ads way, way too intrusive and annoying.
