Salon Warns It May Not Survive Beyond February

from the too-bad dept

The latest news from Salon doesn't look good. They're saying that they may not be able to survive past this month. This would truly be unfortunate, as they have consistently had excellent online content, even if they were struggling for a business model. Apparently, they haven't paid rent in a couple of months, and if they don't raise more money in the next couple of weeks, they'll be forced to shut down. They've had a couple other "dire" warnings in the past, but always managed to scrape up a little more money. This time, though, it looks like they're cutting it very very close.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I hope if this happens the archives stay online somewhere.

I remember when Salon was the first site I visited when I logged online, haven't read it for weeks, if not months.

When the hell is this company FINALLY going to go under? Seems like forever since they have been a hairlength away from extinction. This sewer waste plant of a rag can't go the way of the dodo soon enough. Spare us the Shakesperean death rattle and just DIE already. :-D

With all due respect, I never heard of them.

After they added the premium service I completely stopped going there. There was NO free content (worth reading at least), and the ads had gotten far beyond annoying. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but after a while I just started going to other news sites. Used to be right up there in my Links bar next to CNN. Kinda sad.

      Re: No Subject Given

I used to visit regularly until they added premium content - it killed them, and their buzz. The articles were thoughtful, topics interesting. But definitely *not* worth paying for. Now Google News fits my needs just fine.

Have to admit the few times I visited after, I also found the ads way, way too intrusive and annoying.
