Google Buys Pyra: Blogging Goes Big-Time
from the wow dept
This is a bit of a surprise, but it turns out that Google has bought Pyra, makers of the ever-popular Blogger software. It's a little unclear what they'll do with Blogger, but I can only imagine it will be good. In the past Google has always been good for bloggers in giving them high rankings in its regular searches. Involving blogging as a bigger part of Google News could be very useful. Should be interesting to watch... Update: With the debates going on all over the place about what Google intends to do with Blogger, someone just sent me the following "notes" from a talk that Larry Page of Google gave last week. In it, he mentions that Google was originally intended to be an annotation system, where it would let people read comments about the site they were viewing - and look at how "authoritative" those comments were. If you look at Blogger as an annotation system, combined with Google's PageRank system (named after Larry, of course), suddenly the possibilities become more interesting.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
