Will The Real Symbian Please Step Forward

Despite, or probably more likely due to, being backed by the world's top mobile handset makers, Symbian has suffered an identity crisis over the last couple of years. The Register has a great piece on Symbian's struggle to decide whether or not it was in the mobile device UI business. For some time it seemed that they were just about the OS and letting Nokia go out and sell Series 60 and 80 as the UI layer. Now with the buzz around the Sony Ericsson P800 and the Symbian UIQ interface they seem to be back in the UI game. Only time will really tell since Nokia has licensed Series 60 to practically everyone. But Nokia could easily be the victim of the same anti-800-pound-guerilla sentiment that is hurting Microsoft's wireless efforts. This might give underdog UIQ an fighting chance.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
