Marketers Gather Spam-Filter Complaints

from the almost-as-bad-as-spam-itself dept

It's been getting to the point where some people are wondering if the solution to spam is almost as bad as the problem itself. There have been any number of stories about overly aggressive spam filters - and how the people behind many such filters don't seem to care that they end up blocking legitimate emails as well. In fact, in some cases, the spam filtering people think this is a good thing since it drafts others into the anti-spam fight. In reality, of course, it just drafts people in hating the spam filters - even if they hate spam as well. So, now a group of marketers who are sick of the aggessive nature of anti-spam filtering groups have formed their own mailing list to help fight overly aggressive spam filters. The group is called "I Did Not Get My Email", and will be a place to complain about spam filters that are going too far. It sounds like some bigger name (legitimate) marketing companies are taking part. This group came out of the first meeting of the JamSpam coalition of tech companies looking to work together to stop spam using technology means.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Filters are a band-aid

Filters are not a solution to Spam. And this comes from someone who is a very aggressive filter user at present. I see several possible solutions, unfortunately both require significant changes either in technology, or consumer behavior, so both are doomed to fail.
