Segway's Breakdown
from the not-doing-so-well... dept
So, despite Amazon's ridiculous claims that Segway's were their biggest sellers, and perhaps the most overhyped launch in the history of any product, it seems that Segway isn't doing so hot these days. Last month, we wrote about some of the problems the company was facing, and this article just goes even further - pointing out that reality simply isn't living up to the hype. Companies and government agencies have tested the device, but very few are buying. About the only well known customer to make a large purchase is Walt Disney, who didn't even buy that many. Segway's factory is barely being used at all. So, now, they've gone back to focusing on the consumer market - but at $5,000 and 80 lbs, with only an hour's worth of battery life, it's not a very compelling pitch.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
