Kiddie Porn Extortion Spam Scam?

from the real-or-not? dept

Interesting to follow the trail on this one. CSO Magazine came out with an "anonymous" article talking about a new kind of scam. Someone sends a spam message to people directing them to a certain, perfectly normal website. Then, exploiting some sort of browser security hole, downloads kiddie porn to the user's computer. The final touch, of course, is to email the victim and extort money from them in exchange for promising not to tell their company about the kiddie porn on their computer. It wasn't long before other news sites picked up the story. However, now, Dan Gillmor is questioning the validity of the initial story, saying that the anonymous nature of the article makes it pretty untrustworthy. Dave Sifry, who first brought the story to Gillmor's attention is now wondering if the original story is true, but points out that it is feasable, whether it happened or not.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
