Mobile Phones To Join The War On Crime

Earlier this week, we had an article about how mobile phones were used to catch some crooks in Italy. It seems that people think this may be a wave of the future for mobile phones. People are talking about all sorts of ways that folks with mobile phones and camera phones can help take a bite out of crime. Whether it's taking pictures of suspected crooks, or just using text messages to alert people to a their home alarm going off, mobile phones are becoming about much more than just being a phone. Of course, if the system is to be used for more advanced things like terrorist alerts, there's still a huge question about how well the system will hold up under the stress of sending out millions of messages - at the same time that many people will be trying to communicate with each other. So long as the phones aren't being relied on for anything vital, it's okay.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
