Portland Ponders WiFi
There have been plenty of towns and small cities that are experimenting with covering a small downtown area with WiFi, but now, the city of Portland is apparently thinking about covering all of Portland with WiFi. The article makes it clear that they're in the very early stages of looking at this, and there are plenty of people who don't think it's a worthwhile plan. Proponents point out that it will help develop Portland as a good location for businesses to set up shop. Those against the plan say they don't see what the big deal is, and that WiFi isn't a "make or break" point for many companies. They're underestimating the value of having a WiFi cloud covering the whole city. As we've pointed out before, WiFi is more than just the internet without wires - it lets people do things they never could do before, and opens up plenty of new possibilities.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
