Scientists Play Matchmaker On The Web

from the matching-faces dept

Following the news that people will pay for an online dating service, and the recent success of eMode's "scientific" personality-based dating offering, it's really not a huge surprise that some researchers at MIT are working on a new online dating system that tries to match how you look with your personality. It works by having many people rate certain personality characteristics about people, based on their picture, and then matching up those people with compatible personalities. Of course, this brings up questions about how accurate the personalities match with how the person looks - and also whether or not looks really determine what sort of person you are. However, as they point out, since "first impressions" have such an impact on how someone feels about the people they meet, using these aggregated first impressions can be helpful in figuring out what sort of response a potential date might have to someone.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Physical Homology

It makes sense to match both personality and looks. Most married couples out there look alike. Experiments with mice have shown that they will avoid siblings but still prefer mice that have a similar genetic makeup to their own.
