SONICblue/ReplayTV Seeks Chapter 11 Protection - Selling Off ReplayTV

from the too-bad dept

Well, they had denied this was going to be necessary, but now they've decided they simply can't make it work. ReplayTV maker Sonicblue has filed for bankruptcy with plans to stay in business just long enough to sell everything off. They've signed a tentative agreement to sell the ReplayTV division and their MP3 device division of to D&M Holdings (makers of Denon and Marantz) for around $40 million, but even that's not definite. It's unfortunate for a number of reasons. It would have been nice to see them survive, as they've been more consumer friendly than many other firms. Also, they've been at the forefront of the legal battle to explain to Hollywood the importance of fair use rights. Even with their recent change in senior management it had looked like they were going to continue to fight their legal battles. Now... it's up in the air what will happen to both the products and the lawsuits.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
