Movielink Targeted Towards People Who Don't Like The Rain

from the for-those-rainy-days dept

I still don't understand how anyone expects MovieLink to really work. Hollywood's weak attempt at offering movies online is incredibly restrictive and overpriced (a great combo). However, when asked why people would rather wait hours to download a very restricted movie to watch on their tiny computer screen, when the more feature rich DVD was available down the road at the same price, Movielink's CEO had a bizarre answer: they're targeting people who don't like weather and are concerned about how long their shoes last. He claims that Movielink will be successful where there's bad weather. "If it's snowing, they're more excited. If it's hot out, they're more excited (to download a film). There's a convenience issue. You're not going to wear out the soles of your shoes (walking the aisles of a video store)." Yeah, that's what I always think of when I go to the video store: just how much it's wearing out the soles of my shoes. Is this guy serious?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Another Zombie!

It sounds like we're going to see a repeat of the idiotic recording industry's refusal to adapt to a changing business environment in the movie industry (where are all those secure file transfer sites now? What a shame.).
