Pakistan Tries to Block Porn Web Sites - Surfers Undeterred

from the keep-on-keepin'-on dept

I'm sure it's no big surprise that Pakistan is trying to put in place national filters that block access to porn sites. What's more amusing, though, is the reaction this associated press article got from one 14-year-old (apparently) avid porn surfer on hearing the news. "How can the government deprive us from having fun at least through Web sites? There are tens of thousands of such sites. Will they be able to block all?" Right now, the answer is apparently "no". Someone involved with the blocking process admits that it hasn't gone well, saying, "you block one, and dozens more come up like mushrooms."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

What if it gets taken to the next level?

Westerners describe porn sites as "freedom of speech", as it suits Western interests. What happens when Pakistanis start producing their own porn sites of, say, women being brutally treated? Will Western governments rush to install national firewalls, and will Pakistani media interview a 14 year old white boy who applauds the freedom of speech?
