Ice T Selling Album On Kazaa

from the good-for-him dept

Ice T was one of the outspoken supporters of the Napster concept, realizing that it was going to be the modern version of radio. Now he's putting his money where his mouth is, and is offering his latest album on Kazaa using the Altnet system. This is the extra program within Kazaa that lets content owners sell their works. I'm not sure it'll work very well in terms of generating sales - but it will show some judges that there are other uses for Kazaa beyond just "stealing" music. I would be more encouraged if Ice T gave away the songs and did some more creative things to earn the money, but at least this is a start. The RIAA, of course, is horrified, though they don't have a very good reason. The best they can come up with is that Altnet was built on the basis of privacy - which completely ignores the fact that this has nothing to do with piracy whatsoever.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    more creative, how?

"I would be more encouraged if Ice T gave away the songs and did some more creative things to earn the money, but at least this is a start."

Funny, I thought people wanted artists to channel their creativity into their art, not into innovative business plans. I agree overall that non-traditional distribution is an exciting area in development, and a worthy topic, but how far from their craft must an artist turn to earn money?

Built by Pirates, Driven by Italians

The best they can come up with is that Altnet was built on the basis of privacy [sic]

The entire music business as it exists today was built on the basis of screwing the people who create the product out of every possible penny, but they don't seem to have a problem with that.
