In The Hands Of Geeks, Web Advertising Actually Works
from the well,-look-at-that... dept
This article is actually from last week, so I missed it when it first came out, but I still think it's worth posting. Basically, it's a Fortune article realizing that (oh my goodness!) the type of advertising found on Google actually seems to work. Big companies are finally realizing that unobtrusive, but very relevant text ads are much more worthwhile than annoying, flashy, intrusive ads. It's about time. This is why I still believe that Google's move to put their ads on content sites is a much bigger deal than most people realize. It's going to put some serious hurt into just about every other online ad selling business. If I were running a content site that sold ads (and, no, we have no plans to do so), I don't think I'd want any ads other than relevant, Google-style ads.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: No Subject Given
The good thing about Google's ad system is that they require the ads to be relevant - and if they're not, they disappear. So, the ads, which aren't intrusive at all, often provide very useful information.
