WorldCom To Change Name To MCI

from the you-can-run,-but... dept

As was rumored a few months ago, Worldcom has decided to change their name to MCI in an attempt to ditch the "Worldcom stigma" of hearing the name in conjunction with "scandal" and "bankruptcy" for the past year or so. Somehow, I doubt such a simple name change will do much to change people's impression of the company. I think most people will know that the two companies are the same, but they'll still spend millions of dollars they really don't have to "rebrand".

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Worldcom

Especially since Worldcom was known as MCI Worldcom for a very long time. We all know that MCI = Worldcom = MCI Worldcom, so this rebranding will be far less successful, in my opinion, then Valujet's rebranding as AirTran Airlines (even though we all know it is still Valujet.)

    What's in a name?

Yeah, that will work. Why don't they change their name to Super Hyper Global Com or something?? *j/k*
I think the execs at WorldCom need to worry about getting the business on track and not debating endlessly about their "brand". These days it's the least of their worries.
