Fantasy Games Not Just For Maladjusted Teen Geeks
from the but-still-overwhelmingly-male dept
A psychologist who was also a big fan of online games decided it was time to really look into what sort of people play online games. It sounds like online games are definitely passing from a niche market to the mainstream. It's true that the overwhelming majority (85%) were male, but they weren't necessarily kids any more. About 15% of players pick a gender different from their real life gender. The study also found that about a quarter of all online players spend more than 40 hours a week playing such games - though, they don't see this as unhealthy at all (assuming it isn't interfering with other aspects of their life). Of course, reading the "conclusions" of the study make it sound like someone is trying to justify their own gaming obsession as being "normal".Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
